Comprehensive soft goods package developed in collaboration with Saxdor's design team. Key products include sleeping tent, bow mattresses, 3-person jockey seat, pilot seats, aft sofa, and targa bimini. With design support from Alicja Woroniecka (VA-Varuste Poland). My key responsibilities – product design and 3D modeling according to client specifications, and manufacturability: PUR foam mold design, ABS thermoformed frame structures, and upholstery solutions.

Parametric Canopy Design Tool
Software in Testing Thesis Reporting Phase
Parametric automation tool for boat canopy design – frame systems, canvas design, and cost calculation. Master of Arts thesis project at Savonia University of Applied Sciences, developed in collaboration with VA-Varuste. Built with Rhinoceros to replace manual 3D modeling with an intuitive interface where parameter changes update the model in real-time. Streamlines the design process, improves material calculation accuracy, and generates near real-time cost estimates – particularly valuable during seasonal design peaks in the marine industry. Recognized commercial potential for further development.

Industrial Designer with over 13 years as an in-house designer at VA-Varuste since September 2012 – a manufacturer specializing in marine soft goods. Working directly at the factory means daily contact with production: from material selection to final assembly. I regularly visit boat manufacturers to test and fit the products I design, ensuring everything works in real-world conditions.

When I started, projects were simpler - traditional boat cushion sets. Today, the work has evolved dramatically: complex upholstery systems, sofas and sunbeds with integrated mechanisms, and complete interior packages for clients ranging from small boat manufacturers to leading boat brands. The company has grown alongside - we now operate from two locations: Kuopio, Finland and Suwalki, Poland, with daily collaboration across both sites.

My strength is problem-solving. I can quickly identify potential issues in product designs - essential when development cycles are fast and solutions need to be locked in at the CAD stage. I thrive on managing complexity: my recent work includes the interior and deck upholstery for the Saxdor 460 GTC – cabin mattresses, bow cushions, sunbed cushions, wheelhouse sofas, pilot seats, and aft deck seating – from concept to production coordination.

The variety keeps me motivated. Projects range from simple cushions to complex canopy systems with custom frames and mechanism-driven furniture. Beyond upholstery, I create technical drawings for subcontracted parts – CNC-cut foam, laser-cut metal and wood, plastic components, and welded tube and sheet structures. I've also designed PUR foam molds and molded plastic parts. Sometimes even marketing materials, websites, and vehicle wraps.

I combine traditional design skills with programming to create smarter workflows. Using Python, C#, and Grasshopper/Rhino, I build custom tools that automate repetitive design tasks while maintaining quality and flexibility.

Graduated from Kuopio Academy of Design in 2010. Currently pursuing a Master's degree at Savonia UAS, developing automated modeling software for boat canopy production – always looking for smarter ways to work.

Hands-On Experience

13 years of designing boat canopies, covers, and upholstered products has given deep expertise in taking concepts from initial idea to production-ready designs – working fluently with both traditional hands-on methods and modern digital workflows, choosing the right approach for each project.

Traditional Pattern Development

Extensive experience creating various types of 1:1 scale patterns: full boat canopy models, protective covers, and upholstery products like seat upholstery and cushions. Using paper and plastic sheeting directly on boats, shaping the material around complex hull geometries, marking seams and attachment points, then flattening the 3D form into 2D pattern pieces. These patterns are transferred to CAD for CNC cutting or – when speed is critical – cut manually with scissors straight into production.

Digital Design Pipeline

Working with client-provided 3D boat models or performing on-site 3D scanning. Designing canvas surfaces, enclosure systems, and canopy pipe frames in 3D software, then converting the designs to 2D production patterns and technical production drawings – including complete working drawings for canopy frames used in pipe bending. Full documentation included: manufacturing instructions and customer installation manuals.

For cushions and upholstery products, this extends to foam, plastic, plywood, and metal cutting drawings for subcontractors.

Prototype Building

Hands-on prototype development for cushions and upholstery solutions. Creating component drawings, sourcing parts, and when needed – manufacturing them manually. Shaping foam on a bandsaw, building structural frames, and assembling complete prototypes combining wood, metal, plastic, foam, and upholstery into functional, production-ready designs.

Early-stage simple prototype test structures help evaluate functionality and dimensions before committing to full production. Multi-material mockup models solve problems early, reducing costly revisions during actual prototype manufacturing.

Frame & Structure Design

Canopy systems require more than just canvas – functional geometry is essential. Pipe frames must often fold into storage compartments, requiring careful definition of movement paths that achieve both compact storage position and desired canopy shape when deployed. Fabric tension, frame geometry, and mounting points work together to create results that can be reliably manufactured and installed.

Upholstery and seating systems demand structural strength, secure mounting solutions, and reliable mechanisms. Foldable backrests, reversible cushions, position locks, and load-bearing frames – designed with metal, plastic, or plywood construction. Balancing aesthetics, functionality, durability, and manufacturability for serial production.
