Parametric Canopy Design Tool
Software in Testing Thesis Reporting Phase
Parametric automation tool for boat canopy design – frame systems, canvas design, and cost calculation. Master of Arts thesis project at Savonia University of Applied Sciences, developed in collaboration with VA-Varuste. Built with Rhinoceros to replace manual 3D modeling with an intuitive interface where parameter changes update the model in real-time. Streamlines the design process, improves material calculation accuracy, and generates near real-time cost estimates – particularly valuable during seasonal design peaks in the marine industry. Recognized commercial potential for further development.

Every product I design is engineered for serial manufacturing. This means balancing aesthetics with functionality, durability with cost-efficiency, and innovation with proven manufacturing processes. Understanding materials, production constraints, and end-user needs is at the core of my design approach.

Design Automation & Tools
Currently developing parametric design tools for canopy and bimini production – automating repetitive design tasks while maintaining quality and flexibility. Combining traditional design skills with programming (Grasshopper/Rhino, Python, C#) to create smarter workflows.

Hands-On Experience

13 years of designing boat canopies, covers, and upholstered products has given me deep expertise in taking concepts from initial idea to production-ready designs. I work fluently with both traditional hands-on methods and modern digital workflows – choosing the right approach for each project.

1:1 scale pattern making on boat

Traditional Pattern Development

Extensive experience building 1:1 scale patterns directly on boats using paper and plastic sheeting. Shaping the material around complex hull geometries, marking seams and attachment points, then flattening the 3D form into 2D pattern pieces. These patterns are transferred to CAD for CNC cutting or – when speed is critical – cut manually with scissors straight into production.

Digital Design Pipeline

Working with client-provided 3D boat models or performing on-site 3D scanning myself. Designing canvas surfaces, enclosure systems, and bow tube frames in 3D software, then converting the designs to 2D production patterns. This includes complete documentation: manufacturing instructions and customer installation manuals.

Prototype Building

Hands-on prototype development for cushions and upholstery solutions. Creating component drawings, sourcing parts, and when needed – manufacturing them manually. Shaping foam on a bandsaw, building structural frames, and assembling complete prototypes. My work combines wood, metal, plastic, foam, and upholstery into functional, production-ready designs.

Frame & Structure Design

Designing the complete canopy system – not just the canvas, but also the bow tubes and frame structures that support it. Understanding how fabric tension, tube geometry, and mounting points work together to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing result that can be reliably manufactured and installed.
